What hook are you on?

What hook are you on?You know the hooks-and-eyes at the back of your bra?

Those flimsy little metal things are probably among the most important components of you bra.

They take most of the strain in terms of your body twisting and stretching throughout the day and they hold absolutely everything in place - as many girls who have experienced a catastrophic failure of clips will testify to.

Well, contrary to popular belief, the clips are not purely designed to make your bra fit tighter or to fit people with rapidly-fluctuating back sizes - they're there to prolong the life of your bra.

When you buy a new bra, you should make sure you have the correct back size in the first place, and always start wearing it on the longest setting of hooks at the back. Most bras come with at least three settings, but some come with two - or just one.

As your bra starts getting older and undergoes regular laundering, the material will stretch and you'll find the back becoming more loose. When that starts to happen, you should move up a notch on the hooks.

Eventually, you'll have to move on to the third row of hooks, as the bra's life starts to come to an end.

When that happens, it's time to get a new bra.

But - the golden rule is: start on the longest setting and work your way in over the life of the bra.

Reader's tip: check your time of the month before remeasuring!

check your time of the month before remeasuring! As ever, we're on the case about getting properly measured for a bra - and there's a whole bunch of tricks and tips you can do to make sure your bra is suitable for your bodyshape.

Heree's another great suggestion from this month's reader's tip winner on how to make sure you get the correct measurement:
During that time of the month, breasts can sometimes swell and alter your true size. If you are bra shopping, try to hold off until later when your size will be more accurate.. Nicole Blondell.
Thank-you Nicole - you win a free lingerie set!

It's also a good idea to consider the effect of hormones, possible pregnancy and weight loss or gain at different times before checking your bra size. Sometimes, it takes one or two measurements to get it right.

Reader's tip: pregnant girls, wait for the resizing!

Hot Milk Bras!Being pregnant is one of those magical times in your life; in addition to getting a lovely bundle of joy to take home with you at the end of your endurance test, you swell up to the size of a house, your bum gets bigger, your waist gets bigger, your hands get bigger - and, yes, your boobs get bigger.

Here's some advice from this month's reader's tip winner on what do do about picking out a new bra when the expansion starts to take place:
When pregnant, wait until you are 37 weeks until you get fitted for a nursing bra - it will be much better fitting and more comfortable. Tanya Dracup.
Thank-you Tanya - you win a free lingerie set.

Men's Lingerie Guide for Christmas - Part II

Panache Venus Ivory basqueI've received a few emails about my Man's Guide to shopping for Christmas lingerie posted yesterday (some from guys, some from girls), who said that they appreciated the splendid advice on style, size, colour and general usefulness of lingerie as a Christmas gift for their partner.

However, a few have asked me to recommend some items on the Brastop website that might go down well as something a little more special than a bra set that can double as practical daywear.

So, here goes...

In my own personal experience, Panache tends to make the best bras, knickers, basques and bodyshapers that generally don't make you feel like you're wearing something designed for Lady Gaga.

In particular, I can recommend the Panache Venus Bodyshaper in Pearl or black at only £18.95.

Gossard Superboost bra setPanache also makes a really gorgeous Venus basque in white, also priced just £18.95.

If you want to be a little more daring, why not get the Panache Sienna basque in black/ruby, also £18.95 - and it's available up to a size 38E, which is quite extensive for a basque.

You could go for a Gossard satin Superboost bra in black satin, available with matching suspender and thong for a total of just £16.15.

Or give the Ultimo Duchess set a go, which features the bra, knickers (or thong) and a matching suspender - there's also the Gossard Superboost burgindy plunge bra set with matching suspender, available up to 38FF.

All of the above are not only really quite pretty, sexy and fun - but a few of them work just as well as bras for regular use - particularly to go with a special occasion outfit or party dress.

Now - if you can't find something out of that lot for your partner, you need better help than I can offer!

Dear Chloe: I spill out of every bra I own, please help!

Help! I'm spilling out of everything I own!Do you sometimes find that even though you're wearing the correct size of bra, maybe the style of bra just doesn't do the job of holding you in properly?

Well, this 'Dear Chloe' letter below from Lisa addresses that very subject, with some advice from me on what she should do to avoid the dreaded 'spillage'...
Dear Chloe,

I'm a size 38F and I usually like to wear low cut tops and dresses. But I end up spilling out of everything I wear. Can you recommend a bra that would keep me fully supported all day and still be comfortable to wear?

Thanks,
Lisa
Dear Lisa,

thank-you for your email.

If you're spilling out over the top of your bra, there's a good chance that you could be wearing the wrong cup size, or - you may need to think about trying a more full cup bra.

I'm guessing that you possibly prefer balconette or plunge bras, which, if you're quite full in the cup, might cause the kind of spillage you're referring to.

Every woman differs from size to size, and while full cup bras don't always suit low cut tops or dresses, there's loads of new styles that you can make work with your outfit.

I would recommend any of the Curvy Kate bras on the Brastop website, as they're both stylish and comfortable. The Curvy Kate models go up to a J cup, and prove that you can be very full in the cup and still wear a balconette style of bra, letting you wear a low cut top or dress without showing your bra.

Freya bras are also good in balconette styles (and they're among the best quality bras you can buy), and I would personally recommend the Tango II plunge bra from Panache. It's very supportive - loads of curvy girls wear it, including me - and it really is an amazing, comfy and fashionable bra.

Kind regards,

Chloe.

Don't forget, if you have a lingerie-related problem or question, send it to hannah@brastop.com and she'll forward it to me. The best ones get posted on the website - and the star question wins a free bra set from Brastop.com - just like Lisa!

Reader's tip: mix and match the bikinis

Reader's tip: mix and match the bikinisThe summer may be well and truly over, but now is a good time to think about picking up your swimwear for next year.

Here's a great tip om how to go about selecting a cool look for the beach when the sun comes back out again...
Instead of worrying about looking chic on the beach in designer bikinis, be brave and create your own distinctive style by mixing and matching different bikini bottoms with different bikini tops to be your very own designer. You could mix it up with different colours, patterns and styles, adding a funky sarong and with some super big sunglasses you are ready to hit the beach in style! (Your very own style!). Kathryn Edwards.

Reader's tip: take care of your straps

Straps! Here's another great tip from one of our readers on takign care of your bra straps.

If you take care of the straps, the straps will take care of your boobs!
Wearing and washing a bra can alter the strap lengths, through moving the straps, and through general wear and tear. For that reason it's important to always make time to check and adjust the straps as necessary each time you wear it to make sure you're getting the best shape and support. Angela Robinson.

Don't just dry your bras - dry yourself

Get yourself dried! Here's something that I hadn't really given much thought to...

Have you ever had a quick shower in the morning, got quickly dressed for work and dashed off to face the morning rush, only to find yourself clawing at your bra all morning in discomfort?

I know I have, and now I know why: moisture.

According to an article in the Jamaica Observer (of all places), not properly drying yourself off after a shower (or bath) can cause all sorts of problems with your bra. It's to do with the build-up of moisture, and subsequently, fungus and vacteria in the seams of your bra.

So, if you ever find yourself exepriencing some itching, rednes or inflammaction around parts of your body where your bra is in close contact with, it's probably to do with a poor drying technique - or, your bra hasn't dried properly after being laundered.

Of course, one of the more obvious reasons for a bra giving you problems, is wearing the wrong size - so make sure you get re-measured every few months just to make sure.

Bra Angel inventor is a man!

bra angel

Do you remember the Bra Angel repair kit I mentioned a few months ago?

Sure you do.

Just because it was 1 April that I wrote about it, doesn't mean to say it was a hoax. In fact, I wrote about it again when one of our customers wrote to me asking for help in fixing the underwire on her bra.

Well, I discovered today, via this nice BBC News video about the British Invention Show, which featured the person who inveted the Bra Angel, Mr Scott Dutton - yes - a man! Would you believe it?

Apparently, Scott came up with the idea when the wire on his wife's bra burst through the seam, and she was going to throw it in the bin.

It should be available in high street stores soon, and no girl should be without one in her handbag or underwear drawer - you need never chuck out one of those damaged bras ever again!

Reader's tip winner for September - protect your cleavage from the sun!

We haven't posted any of our top reader tips for a while, so here's the winner for September from Rachel Tassell:
Even though the temperatures dropped the sun can still damage your delicate cleavage area.

Use sun cream, it not only protects against future damage but also moisturises the skin well and reflects light, minimising the appearance of lined and saggy skin. Rachel Tassell.
Fantastic suggestion from Rachel.

Dear Chloe: Help me find a strapless bra

This week's 'Dear Chloe' letter comes from a reader who wants to know a bit more about strapless bras...
Dear Chloe,

After years of trial and error, I know which clothes will suit my figure and have learned to go shopping with a couple of different bras to make sure I don't end up with exposed bras or other fashion sins. But, despite getting better at finding clothes to fit and suit my larger bust, I sadly have to avoid any strapless tops because of bra-related problems.

With so many beautiful strapless tops and dresses in the shops, I am rather annoyed that I can't find a strapless bra for me. Often the strapless bras for larger busts are uncomfortable, and I have to adjust them every few mins to prevent slipping or they are simply huge.

I would love to find a strapless bra that give me support and may be a little bit of cleavage too.

Thanks - Aurora
Dear Aurora,

thank-you for your email.

Believe me - I can genuinely sympathise with your problem. I've often found myself trying on a gorgeous strapless dress that I want to buy for a wedding, only to change my mind at the last minute, simply because I know I'll have difficulty finding a strapless or backless bra that will do the job of holding me up, remaining comfortable for about 12 hours and that I won't spend the entire evening fiddling with or jiggling my boobs back into place (which, while appealing to the men, is not exactly ladylike) or worrying that I'm going to pop out of at a rather embarassing moment.

Strapless bras are supposed to be specifically designed so that you can wear one without needing the straps to hold everything in place. The cups are usually very generous on a strapless bra, but are often quite firm - sometimes containing a strong elastic to hold you in place or a moulded shape made of a stiff foam-like material.

Personally, I've found that Panache tends to makes very good styles of strapless bras, and if you get one in your exact size, they're usually satisfactory. I own a Panache Ivory bra, and while it's not exactly my favourite bra in the drawer, it generally does the job. Certainly, I've never had any mishaps with it - although, after about 12 hours of constant wear, it's usually a relief to take it off - and my back usually resembles a Formula One racetrack with the impression marks it leaves behind.

Unfortunately, you're probably not going to find a strapless bra that does anything for your cleavage - however, one benefit of a good strapless bra (the Panache Ivory in particular) is the amazing shape it gives you; Jane Russell hasn't got a look-in on the smooth curves you'll end up with. And, more importantly, you can do a bit of dancing without giving yourself a couple of black eyes.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Chloe.

Reader's suggestions: winners for July and August

Bra purse
With me being away on holiday and so many things to catch up on, I totally forgot about our suggestions of the month.

So, here's two in a row for you - the winners from July and August:
Your Bra can make a very secure place to hide precious items. Tack a little fabric pouch into the bra you usually wear when travelling, and pop your travel money in it! - Brita Bevis

(Brita's entry reminds me of the Youtube video doing the rounds of the girl called Winter Pierzina, who has demonstrated some very innovative use of her bra as a means for storing all her girly items).

And the August winner:

Summer clothes are prime culprits for showing more of your bra than you'd necessarily like. The best way round this is to match your bra colour to your skin tone, not your top. Or wear a bright contrasting bra, that you'll enjoy showing off! - Cindy George

Cindy also kindly commented: "I love the blog, particularly the bit about washing bras - I remember I was horrified when I first learned that some people wear them more than one without washing!
Well done to both Brita and Cindy for their entries - the prizes are on the way.

Dear Chloe: my underwire keeps escaping!

This is the first of our 'Dear Chloe' letters, that I'll be posting here on the blog regularly.

Every month, we'll pick out a star letter that will be eligible to win a free bra set from Brastop.com - the winning letter will be clearly marked as 'Star Letter' at the top.

First, up, is Romey:
Dear Chloe,

I am a recent convert to the REAL size bra (34FF) having struggled for years with 36-38D! But lately an embarrassing thing has happened, more than once. The underwire has tried to escape, creeping out over the top of my breasts and appearing while I sat in a restaurant. My friend was amazed, wondering what this thing was rising from my cleavage. I hastily heaved it back into place, but nothing will keep it there, so I have to throw the bra out. But it was expensive and is nearly new!

Why does this happen and how can I keep the wire in its place, out of sight?

Romey.
Well Romey, the first thing that springs to mind is that even though you've been properly measured, you could still be wearing the wrong size of bra. My first suggestion is to seek a second opinion and get re-measured.

Next, I would suggest buying a high-quality make of bra in the correct size. It's often really tempting to purchase a cheap bra to try out your new size, but the inferior stitching, materials and manufacturing process can lead to seams popping and wires poking through.

Try a good quality make like Fantasie or Freya, or one of the Curvy Kate range - they're slightly more expensive, but they're worth it (most of the bras I own are Fantasie, Freya, Curvy Kate or Lepel).

Finally, if you've spent a lot of money on the bra that's causing you problems, you should pick up a Bra Angel Repair Kit and fix the underwire back into place.

Regards,

Chloe.

Romy's letter will be eligible for the Star Letter of the month and will go into the hat for a chance to win a free bra set from Brastop.com.

Don't forget, send your 'Dear Chloe' questions to hannah@brastop.com and she'll forward them on to me!

Taking care of your bras explained

Dirty brasKelly Skahan of The Examiner continues her series on undergarments with a look at taking care of your bras.

Washing bras is quite possibly one of the areas of underwear that gets the least attention. I know I'm guilty of throwing my bras in the washing with everything else on the pile, taking care only to make sure I'm not washing a white bra with a black top.

We seldom give any consideration to how often we wash our bras, how we dry them, what sort of detergent we use or what items to mix them up with.

Taking a little more time over how you wash your bras will not only extend their life, but will keep them in good shape and maintain the quality of the materials.

Kelly suggests that the first step towards taking care of your bras is not to sleep in them, but I disagree to some extent here. I have a couple of bras that I keep for sleeping in, as it's often more comfortable and helps maintain breast shape - but, broadly-speaking, she's right - wearing a bra to bed, especially an underwired or tight one, can prevent normal lymphatic flow, which isn't good for your breasts, and can distort the shape of your bra.

When it comes to laundry, hand washing with a lingerie soap is always best, but it takes time. If you purchase a laundry bag and hook up the back straps of your bra together before putting it inside the bag for washing, it should help present it getting tangled or the wires caught in your washing mashine.

As for drying, it's important not to leave your bras dangled radiators or door handles, as I'm often guilty of - it dries the bras out, and causes the material to constrict. Fasten the bra up when drying it, and try to hang it in the normal fashion on a bra hanger while it airs off naturally.

Probably the best advice when taking care of your bras is to get two the same - you'll be able to rotate tem more often, and they'll last a lot longer.

Reader's tip winner for May - watch out for the back pain

Back Pain!Another great tip from one of our readers, this time a monthly winner from Chloie Parsons about making sure you get a proper band-size when you choose your bra, to avoid the really awful back pain us curvy girls often suffer from.
"Being a life-long curvy girl, I can attest to the fact that a poorly-fitting bra will create back pain. If your back is becoming painful, do not just blame it on gardening, lifting the baby, or working at the computer all day. If your bra is riding up in the back, then the weight of your breasts is not being supported by the band. The weight is being supported by your back (and neck). A proper fitting bra should eliminate all, or almost all, of that back pain!" From Chloie Parsons
Don't forget, if you have a tip or a suggestion, you can either post a comment below or you can fill out our suggestion form (if you fill out the form, you could be in with a chance of winning a free lingerie set of your choice).

Summer solutions - what bra to wear in the sun?

Summer is here!Okay girls, summer is here, the sun is shining, and it's time to start thinking about what bra you can wear with your vest top or the right swimming costume to go for before you jet off on holiday.

Susan Martin at The Buffalo News (presumably, that's Buffalo, New Jersey) has written a lengthy article on some of the perils of wearing the wrong bra with the wrong summer outfit - but there's some good tips in there.

Among her ideas are clear bra straps, skin-toned bras and strapless bras.

Personally, I've caught on to the coloured bra gimmick this year - the brighter the colour of bra, the less obtrusive it looks when the straps are showing under a skimpy top.

One of the big tips Susan gives is to make sure you give plenty of consideration to the underwear you'll be wearing before you invest in an expensive summer dress; there is nothing worse than getting home from an expensive shopping trip, only to spend frustrated hours in front of the mirror trying on bra after bra that simply will not match the outfit you've bought.

And a final summer tip from Susan: Let your deodorant dry completely before putting on your outfit - you don't want white stains all over your nice red flowery dress.

Reader's tip - jump up and down to get that bra to fit

Jump in your bra! We're always keen to hear advice on how to get properly measured for a bra, what bra suits a certain occassion or outfit - and how to get your bra to fit comfortably.

Here's a great tip from one of our readers about jiggling about to make your boobs sit comfortably in your bra.
"When you try a bra on, jump up and down for a few seconds. It might feel as if it fits when you stand still but when you start to do everyday things it may start to ride up or you may bulge out it so it lets you see if it will be supportive." From Steph Sneddon

Reader's tip - Don't write-off a new bra

How many times have you bought a new bra, got it home, tried it on and thought: "Arg! - this doesn't fit me, it's horrible, it makes me look terrible!" Or, thoughts to that effect?

Well, here's a tip from one of our readers suggesting that you maybe shouldn't write off a new bra too soon...
"Remember that some bras take a wear or two to 'settle' in. Don't write off a great bra because it didn't give you quite the right look the first time. I have a fantastic Freya bra that gave me a 'pointy' look the first time I wore it, but now it simply gives me fantastic lift and shape. It's my new favourite bra." from Kelly Dolson

Reader's tip: pop a bottle of perfume in the drawer

Two things can happen with items that spend too long lingering in your lingerie drawer; either the drawer ends up jam-packed with recently-laundered items and everything smells of fabric softener, or the items you haven't used in a while end up getting musty and dusty. So, to combat the potential smell of a stale undies drawer, here's a tip from one of our readers:
"Pop a used bottle of your favourite perfume with the stopper off in your underwear drawer - the scent will infuse all of your undies!" Barbara Taylor

Reader's tip: Protect the Lycra - rotate the bras!

Lycra
Is your underwear a little out of shape? Are the straps and cups looking a bit sad and stretched? Well, look no further than our winner of this month's reader's tip:
"You should avoid wearing your bra for two consecutive days. Your body exudes heat and heat makes the Lycra in the bra stretch when it is warm. Wearing your bra for more than one day in a row will cause it to deteriorate faster. Lycra needs at least 24 hours to cool off ? so alternating bras each day will go a long way towards good bra care." Leona Sackey-Addoo
Well done to Leona, she wins a set of luxury underwear as this month's reader's tip winner.

Reader's tip: sort your undies with a shoe tidy

Is your underwear drawer creaking at the seams with bras, knickers and just about every other form of underwear on the face of the planet?

If it's anything like mine, it's probably a nightmare trying to find the white bra that matches with a specific pair of white knickers - so here's a small tip from one of our readers on how to clean up the clutter:
Have trouble finding matching sets in the jumble of a tightly packed underwear draw? Buy one of those hanging shoe organisers, hang it in your wardrobe and store your lingerie into matching sets/colour in each of the compartments. Kate Ward
Don't forget, if you have a tip or a suggestion, you can either post a comment below or you can fill out our suggestion form (if you fill out the form, you could be in with a chance of winning a free lingerie set of your choice).

Reader tip: jiggle while you wear

We're always giving out various tips on getting measured for a bra, choosing the right bra and wearing the right bra with the right outfit - but how about how to put a bra on?

Well, here's a small tip on a simple way to get comfortable after you've fastened yourself up and adjusted everything:
When putting on your bra, fasten it then lean forward at the waist and give a little jiggle from side-to-side. This ensures all of your breast fills the available bra space and gives a perfect fit when you stand upright again. Beth Bowdler

Reader tip: keep your bra shape for longer

Here's another reader tip about how to take good care of your bras when laundering them:
"When your bra is still damp from the washing machine smooth the cup back into it's original shape and lay in the airing cupboard. I have found if you spend that little extra time with the larger cup size that they keep their shape for longer." Deborah Rawles

Reader tip: touch your toes when trying on a bra

We're always keen to promote proper bra fitting and sizing here at Brastop.com, and this tip offers another little idea to make sure you're trying on the correct size of bra:
"When trying a new bra, bend down and touch your toes. If the breasts sit neatly in the cups and don't jump out and the back of the bra doesn't move up to the shoulder blades -- it's perfect!" Magda Budzinska.

Reader's tip - keep your bra sets together in the drawer

Tangled bras
How many times have you turned out your entire underwear drawer looking for the knickers that match with a specific a bra?

Well, here's a simple enough tip from one of our readers that should help solve the problem:
"Put your bra through a leg of the knickers, and clip it up, to stop the set getting separated in the drawer." Annie Hylands.

Don't just wear the right size - wear the right style

Inferno Multiway bra from Panache - wear the right style of bra
You'll soon find that I'm one for promoting the importance of getting measured properly for a bra - not just to improve your shape - but to help with you posture, your health, and your well-being.

However, it's just as important to wear the right style of bra. All too often I find myself getting ready for a night out, only to spend an hour trying out different bra/top/dress combinations and losing my mind with frustration because I'm showing a strap, too much cleavage or my bra ends up showing through on a flimsy top.

Gill Hart at Suite 101 has written an informative article on the various different styles of bra, covering most of the major bra shapes/designs and giving some helpful tips on which bra works best with what outfit.

As Gill says, once you build up a wardrobe of different bra styles you'll soon see the difference wearing the correct bra makes to your look and self-confidence.

Oh - and one excellent bit of advice from Gill: always have a multiway bra in your armoury - they're not always the most comfortable to wear, or the easiest of bras to fasten up, but it'll get you out of a bind when you're really struggling to find something that works with your outfit.

Reader's tip - protect your washing machine

washing machine
Here's another tip from one of our readers about how to safely wash your bras:
'Wash all underwired bras in a pillowcase, if the wire comes out it won't break the washing machine - like mine did!' from Jennifer Thorpe

Reader's tip - Don't rely on the size alone

Here's another regular feature we're going to try here on the Brastop.com blog: reader's tips and advice about bras.

If you have a tip or a suggestion, you can either post a comment on any one of our blog entries (you can post anonymously, or using your own login) or you can fill out our suggestion form (if you fill out the form, you could be in with a chance of winning a free lingerie set of your choice).

We want to hear your bra tips, suggestions, ideas or helpful advice on choosing a bra, wearing a bra, cleaning your bras, storing them, re-using them, repairing them - or getting the best out of them.

So, which style of bra goes with what outfit? What bra gives you the best shape? What bra does your partner prefer you to wear? Go on - send 'em in!

Here's one to get us going:
"Don't rely on measurements when trying to find your bra size. It depends on the style of the bra, and the shape of your breasts more than how many inches you are." from Harriet Lewis.
So girls, as Harriet says, don't completely rely on the size alone - it's all too tempting to pick a bra that looks good and maybe gives you accentuated bumps and curves that you didn't have before, but mostly likely you'll end up with problems further down the line.

Get to know how to fit and size a bra properly, then find the style and shape that suits you best.

Watch our bra fitting video for more on how to make sure you're wearing the right bra:
