Brits spending more on lingerie than the FrenchWould you say you're spending more money on lingerie these days? I know I do - well, I certainly spend more money on bras than I used to, but I'm not so sure about 'lingerie' (as in sexy bedroom wear). According to Mimi Spencer of The Times, British women are spending more money than our French counterparts, who traditionally love their lingerie. UK underwear sales grew by 40 per cent in the decade to 2009, with British women spending an average £71 a year on news lingerie, compared to £70 per year in France. There's also been an explosion of choice in thep ast 10 years, from brands like Bravissimo and La Senza to a massive increase in competition on the high street between the big stores like Debenhams and Marks & Spencer. However, it's estimated that the UK women's underwear market, currently worth £3.4 billion a year, will decline by 1.2 per cent this year due to the recession, and not necessarily due to choice or availability. So, do you reckon you're spending more on lingerie these days, or do you spend just about the same (or less) as before? Let us know in the comments below. Keep your money safe with the RackTrapAre you getting ready for your summer holiday? I know I am (44 days and counting until Florida!).Now, how many of you out there struggle to find somewhere to keep your cash and valuables while walking around in a skimpy vest-top and shorts in the summer heat? Well, fear not, because the latest crazy invention called The RackTrap allows you to dispense with a bumbag or a handbag and gives you the safest, ideal location to store your money: in your bra. I kid you not girls - the RackTrap is a tiny, flat purse that slips inside the cup of your bra and keeps your cash and cards safe from pesky muggers. Seriously - you need to read the instructions on how to use the RackTrap on the official website ("First, locate your breasts" - ahem, I generally have no trouble finding mine). If you fancy buying one, they cost $7.95 (about £5.00) and come in a variety of colours. [Via: The Examiner]

Say knickers to the recession![]() At least two stories hit the news headlines on Monday regarding lingerie bucking the downward trend in the economy. First, BBC News reported that luxury lingerie firm Agent Provocateur published sales figures for the year to mid-March up 8% at £22.4m. Then, NBC Los Angeles reported on the lingerie industry being "a lace-trimmed beacon of hope in this dingy economy" in tough times. Meanwhile, the Financial Times analyst Samantha Pearson says that while the lingerie market will decline by 0.8% in 2009, the drop is considerably lower than the 4% downward slide expected in the grocery industry (apparently, it's a good thing in the financial sector to decline less than in other areas of business). Garry Hogarth, chief executive of Agent Provocateur says the positive trend in the lingerie business is down to couples staying at home to save money, with more women investing in adventurous apparel to spice up their relationships. "It makes women feel good about themselves and we all need a bit of cheering up at the moment," says Mr Hogarth. How about you - are you saving your money for a nice bra set that you'll wear in on a Saturday night? |
