Bra fitters letting bigger women down According to a new report, published today in The Express, larger-breasted women are being squeezed into the wrong-sized bra because of high street stores' poor fitting services. It's an all-too-familiar tale, women being given the wrong size of bra because the shop assistants aren't trained properly (or are not confident enough to do the job) and i really shouldn't be the case. A group of undercover researchers for Which? Magazine with cup sizes of DD or bigger were offered such poor lingerie fittings that in many cases a cheap market-stall bra would have been better, often being given different bra sizes in different stores, with one woman told her bust size was 34FF in one shop but 40D in another. John Lewis got the best score at 45 per cent, for overall service, closely followed by Bravissimo at 43%. Marks & Spencer scored 36% with Debenhams on 35%. We've said it before, and we'll keep saying it - there's no excuse for a poorly-fitting bra. Visit our bra fitting guide for some good advice on finding the right bra for you, and get remeasured regularly!

Reader's tip: try on a tight t-shirt when fitting a bra We're always going on about getting properly measured for a bra here at Brastop and there's a whole bunch of tricks and tips you can do to make sure your bra is suitable for your bodyshape. However, here's some advice from this month's reader's tip winner on how to go a little bit further to make sure your bra looks good on you: Try on a tight fitting t-shirt to see how your new bra looks. Then reach up and bend down to see if the cup holds the breasts adequately.. Irene Geoghegan.Thank-you Irene - you win a free lingerie set! Dear Chloe: What do I do about my fluctuating bra size? And we're back!I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and New Year. I ate far too much turkey and drank too much wine and I'll spend eternity in the gym paying for it. Ah well, never mind - back to business. Let's start with a Dear Chloe letter from Sandra Lee: Dear Chloe,Dear Sandra, thank-you for your letter. This is a tricky one, because everyone's bra size changes naturally over the course of time - sometimes it goes up, sometimes it goes down. There's all sorts of factors that contribute to it, from hormones, the contraceptive pill, weight loss/gain, pregnancy, exercise and natural growth. In addition to getting remeasured regularly (which is important not only because you change size naturally, but also because bra manufacturing varies from company to company), I would firstly recommend establishing yourself with a brand of bra that you find fits you well and try to stick with it. Of course, this isn't always possible - and you might want to try different styles and colours - but it will generally help you find bras that fit and work for you. The other thing you could try is bra extenders - a quick Google search will find you them at all sorts of lingerie outlets, eBay and various clothing websites. Bra extenders offer you anywhere between 2" and 4" inches of extension to the hook-and-eye fasteners at the back of your bra, providing you with some 'give' if the band is too small across your back. They also come in shorter widths, if you only need 1" or 2" of 'give' - and they're really cheap too, so it's an inexpensive way of modifying the size of a bra without trimming bits off or stitching parts on. The final suggestion is to always buy a quality brand of bra - Fantasie, Freya, Curvy Kate, Lepel, Gossard and Panache are are all good suggestions - the materials tend to be better, less 'firm' and should provide a more comfortable fit in your size - and all are available at our website Brastop.com. I hope this helps. Regards, Chloe. Don't forget, if you have a lingerie-related problem or question, send it to hannah@brastop.com and she'll forward it to me. The best ones get posted on the website - and the star question wins a free bra set from Brastop.com just like Sandra! Labels: bra size, dear chloe, help, letter, measuring, suggestions

Reader's tip: pregnant girls, wait for the resizing! Being pregnant is one of those magical times in your life; in addition to getting a lovely bundle of joy to take home with you at the end of your endurance test, you swell up to the size of a house, your bum gets bigger, your waist gets bigger, your hands get bigger - and, yes, your boobs get bigger. Here's some advice from this month's reader's tip winner on what do do about picking out a new bra when the expansion starts to take place: When pregnant, wait until you are 37 weeks until you get fitted for a nursing bra - it will be much better fitting and more comfortable. Tanya Dracup.Thank-you Tanya - you win a free lingerie set. Liverpool women sport the biggest boobs in the country![]() If you're from Liverpool in the UK, then you're part of an elite group; you're among the women with the biggest average boob size in the country. According to a recent survey carried out by Debenhams (let's face it folks, they only do these things to sell more bras), women from Liverpool are on average a 34E. Newcastle was second at 34DD, and Manchester third, at 36D. Birmingham could only manage 34A. Glasgow was 32D and Edinburgh 36C (Londoners were a 34D). The store looked at all bra sales from April to October to discover the average bust size for different towns and cities. The survey also found that at least 70% of women wear the wrong size and believe themselves to be a 34B.

Dear Chloe: Can you help me sort my loose straps?![]() Today's 'Dear Chloe' letter concerns a subject close to my heart - loose straps. Dear Chloe,Dear Ola, thank-you for you email. As with many bra problems, the first thing I would suggest is that you are possibly wearing the wrong size of bra. First, take a look at our fitting guide videos, and determine if your bra is causing you problems - which might indicate that you're wearing the wrong size. Next, go and get measured professionally - it's really the only way to make sure you're wearing the right size. One other thing to consider is the bra Tweakerz I mentioned yesterday - they might help make your bra straps behave. However, the fundamental cause of bra straps coming loose is usually that they're just not fastened correctly - sometimes people make them too tight, or too loose - and it's just about making sure you have the right balance. I always find that when the straps are exactly where they should be, my bra feels a little bit loose around the straps - but that's the way it's supposed to be - you should have enough room to slide two fingers underneath them. Remember - don't tighten the straps to give yourself lift - the band and cups should hold you in place. If they don't, you're wearing the wrong cup size.

Dear Chloe: I've lost weight - am I wearing the right size of bra?![]() Ever since we launched our 'Dear Chloe' section here on the Brastop Blog, our inbox has been jam-packed full of messages from girls (and guys) sending me questions about sizing, fitting, purchasing, mending and wearing bras (among other things). Here's this week's question: Dear Chloe,Dear Lisette, thank-you for your email. The first thing I would say is that guesswork is no replacement for a proper, professional measurement of your bra size. However, it's relatively easy to measure yourself using our measuring guides, so you should just grab a measuring tape and give it a go, as it'll give you an accurate idea of your size. The main thing to bear in mind, is that even though you're losing weight, the reduction may not have a dramatic impact on your bra size. While your boobs do contain fatty tissue (known as 'adipose') it's generally a 1:1 ratio with the rest of your bodymass. Of course, your bra size can fluctuate naturally just as part of normal day-to-day life, so it's always worth keeping an eye on it. As for bra styles, bigger busted women tend to prefer a full-cup bra, but it's really down to personal preference and the style that suits you most (I'm a balconette sort-of girl, but I'm a 32FF). Brastop stocks plenty of bras in your urrent cup size (GG), so you just need to make sure all the other measurements add up, including the all-important band size. Regards, Chloe. Don't forget, send your 'Dear Chloe' questions to hannah@brastop.com and she'll forward them on to me! Labels: advice, balconette, big bras, dear chloe, full cup, measuring

The tell-tale signs of a badly-fitting bra It's one of our missions here at Brastop to make sure as many girls as possible are wearing the correct size and shape of bra (you'd never guess, by the way we go on about it though). Homemakers has published a brief article on some of the tell-tale signs that the bra you're wearing is either the wrong size or the wrong shape. Among the giveaways: - the back of your bra is riding up high on your bacj - the centre of your bra lifts away from the breastbone - sagging breasts (this is the one you can see a mile off) - straps diggin into your shoulders and causing weal marks - band pinches in at sides - general discomfort (for example, when you've been wearing your bra for a few hours) - breast spillage (when your boobs push up, over cups) - uni-boob (when your boobs are squished in so tight that two appear as one -- bad sports bras are common culprits) If you spot any of the above, get measured properly, and get yourself a nice-fitting bra.

How to avoid bra faux pas Liisa Thorson, Nordstrom's regional fit stylist has answered a few questions on how to avoid chosing the wrong bra or making a dreadful wardrobe combination. As ever, the advice centres around getting fitted properly (and regularly) and making sure you have variety in your bra drawer. There's also some common sense tips in there too, particularly about getting yourself bras that suit your clothing, invest in some sports bras, and try to hand-wash your bras instead of machine-washing them.

Time to ditch your bra? According to an article in The Sun today, we should consider ditching our bras and letting our boobs fly free. The article quotes some pseudo-science that suggests "wearing a bra has no real benefits and can even cause health problems if fitted incorrectly". It seems to be based around the perennial issue of women wearing poorly-fitting bras, or bras that simply aren't designed for prolonged wear. The simple solution is to make sure you're properly fitted for your bra, and to give your boobs a break every now and then. Personally speaking, Jennifer Anniston can let her meagre mammaries fly free if she thinks it's fashionable to do so - but I think the sight of my 32FFs running wild in a t-shirt on a regular basis is probably more than the general public is ready for.

Bra measurements explained It would surprise you how many women simply haven't got a clue how bra sizing works. Most women, at the start of their bra-wearing life, opt for a bra that fits them around the chest and holds their boobs in place, and seldom move on. Few women are measured regularly, and end up just picking out bras that seem to fit them. The Examiner's Kelly Skahan has put together an article explaining how the bra measurement process works, and how you end up with the strange combination of letters and numbers to arrive at a size like 32D or 38FF. Of course, Kelly is from Seattle, and US measurements are slightly different from UK sizes, but the principle is the same: - your bra size is made up of the band (the number) and the cup size (the letter) - you obtain the band size by measuring around your chest just under your boobs and add five if it's odd, four if it's even. This is your band size (the number) - measure around the fullest part of your bust and subtract your band size from the number to obtain your cup size (the letter - or letters, in my case). So, for example, your cup size will correspond to a letter of the alphabet, starting with A=1, B=2, C=3 and so on. (For more on UK cup sizes, visit our bra size chart page). So, for example, I'm 27" all the way around under my bust, so I need to add 5 to get a band size of 32. However, I'm 40" around the fullest part of my bust (40 - 32 = 8 = FF), which makes me a 32FF. I'll publish more on this later in the week, but if you haven't been remeasured recently, please do - it'll make all the difference to your well-being.

Reader's tip - jump up and down to get that bra to fit We're always keen to hear advice on how to get properly measured for a bra, what bra suits a certain occassion or outfit - and how to get your bra to fit comfortably. Here's a great tip from one of our readers about jiggling about to make your boobs sit comfortably in your bra. "When you try a bra on, jump up and down for a few seconds. It might feel as if it fits when you stand still but when you start to do everyday things it may start to ride up or you may bulge out it so it lets you see if it will be supportive." Reader's tip - get measured during and after pregnancyAs we mention regularly here on the Brastop blog, wearing the right size of bra is an important part of life - but it's even more important if you've just had a baby, or if you're pregnant. Here's a great tip from one of our readers about pregnancy and nursing bras. "It is sooo important to get fitted at regular intervals! A year ago I gave birth to a beautiful daughter, but since then my body has changed sooo much. I was prepared for the inevitable increase in size that comes along with pregnancy and breastfeeding, but not for the changes once these are over. Now that my daughter is weaned I'm off for a new fitting, as my 'old' bras don't fit anymore! At least I have an excuse to buy more gorgeous new bra designs!" from Lorraine BruceDon't forget, if you have a tip or a suggestion, you can either post a comment below or you can fill out our suggestion form (if you fill out the form, you could be in with a chance of winning a free lingerie set of your choice). Why do so many women wear the wrong bra size?![]() Is it embarrassment about getting measured properly? Is it a comfort thing, where you find a bra that seems to fit and just stick with it? Well, the Daily Mail newspaper found 14 ordinary women of varying ages and bra sizes and had them all re-measured - and the results were quire startling; only one of them was wearing the correct bra size. We can't stress it enough girls - and we'll keep saying it until the 'wrong bra size' statistics come down: get measured properly for a bra! It doesn't take long, and you'll feel so much better when you're wearing a bra designed for your body. Who's best if you've got big breasts?Following on from their recent feature on how the high street stores measured up when it comes to sizing bras, The Sun newspaper has published another feature in the wake of the Marks & Spencer 'bra tax' story, this time sizing up the best value for money if you're looking for a D+ cup size bra.Model India Madeleine, a 32D, went around several high street stores, including M&S, House of Fraser, Primark, Next, Bravissimo, La Senza, John Lewis and Debenhams. The cheapest bra on offer was a 34DD Primark bra at £6, which rated poorly, along with low marks for John Lewis - while Debenhams and M&S recieved good marks for quality. Next also rated well, but House of Fraser was bottom of the bra pile. The most interesting aspect of the survey was the comparison of quality over price; not one of the highly-rated bras cost less than £12 (with the exception of the M&S bra, which was on a special discount). Once again, if they had paid a visit to Brastop.com, they would have found both quality and value in any of our range! Labels: bargain, big bras, brastop, marks and spencer, measuring, quality, value

Unbelievabral! - new support bra bucks the recessionHere's a nice success story to wash away the gloom of swine flu and the recession - about Staci Berner, a stay-at-home mum who was sick of trying to find a decent bra that fitted her.The solution? Staci designed her own - the Unbelievabra, a truly remarkable bra that comes in just about every size imaginable and provides a smoothing shape (or, so it says on the website). Of course, not everyone can design, patent and market their own bra designs - so, to save yourself the trouble, just nip over to Brastop.com and pick out something nice in your size. Simple.

How do the high street stores measure up?The Sun newspaper recently sent out Charlotte Martin to five high street stores in London to see how they fared when measuring her bra size.Charlotte thought she was a 34D, but was genuinely surprised at the level of service she received - not to mention the recommended sizes she was offered at the various popular outlets, including Marks & Spencer, Rigby & Peller, Debenhams, La Senza and House of Fraser (plus she also did a DIY job with Figleaves.com). Unsurprisingly, the best of all with 5 marks out of 5 was Rigby & Peller (who were also the most expensive) and worst of all was Marks & Spencer (which surprised me). Pity they didn't send Charlotte to Brastop - we would have earned a 6 out of 5!

Reader tip: jiggle while you wear![]() Well, here's a small tip on a simple way to get comfortable after you've fastened yourself up and adjusted everything: When putting on your bra, fasten it then lean forward at the waist and give a little jiggle from side-to-side. This ensures all of your breast fills the available bra space and gives a perfect fit when you stand upright again. Boobs are STILL getting biggerI feel like I should make this a regular feature here on the Brastop blog, as quite a few news outlets are reporting on a recent study that suggests boobs are getting bigger. This arrives after the news that Australian women wearing bigger bras than ever before - but there is good news girls - apparently, we're also getting slimmer (not that it feels like it sometimes). Research carried out on 1,000 women was conducted by cosmetic surgery clinic Birkdale and found that last year the average band size for women under 30 was 36 inches, but now it is 34 inches, with the average cup size rising from a C to D. A spokeswoman for the clinic said that the change is probably down to women exercising more, cutting down on booze and fast food and buying the right size bra. Let's hope it stops there and doesn't get too out of hand.
