Postie swaps stamps for brasThe Craven Herald and Pioneer reports on John Tidwell, a sub-postmaster from West Marton who has stepped down from his duties dishing out stamps and weighing parcels to sell underwear. Just over two years ago, when his Post Office was threatened with closure, he started to sell lingerie and his business has become so successful that he is now training local woman Leah Booker to be the new sub-postmistress so he can concentrate on it full-time. Good on John - I wonder if he stocks Curvy Kate...? Brits spending more on lingerie than the FrenchWould you say you're spending more money on lingerie these days? I know I do - well, I certainly spend more money on bras than I used to, but I'm not so sure about 'lingerie' (as in sexy bedroom wear). According to Mimi Spencer of The Times, British women are spending more money than our French counterparts, who traditionally love their lingerie. UK underwear sales grew by 40 per cent in the decade to 2009, with British women spending an average £71 a year on news lingerie, compared to £70 per year in France. There's also been an explosion of choice in thep ast 10 years, from brands like Bravissimo and La Senza to a massive increase in competition on the high street between the big stores like Debenhams and Marks & Spencer. However, it's estimated that the UK women's underwear market, currently worth £3.4 billion a year, will decline by 1.2 per cent this year due to the recession, and not necessarily due to choice or availability. So, do you reckon you're spending more on lingerie these days, or do you spend just about the same (or less) as before? Let us know in the comments below. Curves are breaking in to high fashion Eleanor Mills of The Times writes today about the increasing presence of curvy models in fashion, which has slowly nudged designers and retailers to start stocking bigger sizes in everything from clothing to lingerie (and I mean lingerie, not just 'underwear').From Karl Lagerfeld to Mark Fast - all the big name designers are moving away from skinny waifs and more towards women with shape - and it's all down to the availability of better fitting, better designed, cheaper and suitable lingerie for bigger women. And she's right - not so long ago, bigger cup sizes were a nightmare to source, and generally consisted of designs that looked as though they had jumped off a bus from the 70s. As Eleanor says, a decent fitting bra or basque is the cornerstone of a woman's foundation - of her shape and comfort. If you can get a bra to fit well - especially if you're big in the cup department, then finding clothes to suit is a breeze. It's about time curves started coming to the forefront of modelling and fashion - after all, we make up the majority of the population. Labels: curves, fashion, lingerie, models, plus size bras

Unique advertising: sillhouetted woman reveals allAubade www.frenchartofloving.com from Chainsaw Advertisement Company on Vimeo. Here's an interesting way to advertise your new range of lingerie... For 10 days, Aubade, along with a Parisian advertisement agency placed a woman behind a blind in a Paris apartment, teasing passers-by with glimpses of her life (mostly, her silhouetted figure undressing, drying her hair, etc.) at rue Montorgueil. After having experienced all these moments with this young unknown woman, Aubade finally revealed its brand new website, the French Art of Loving. I still can't figure out what the website is all about, and while Aubade's outfits and collections are very swish - they're definitely a bit too French for my liking. Labels: advertising, lingerie

The must-have undergarments for every occasion The Examiner's Samantha Cabrera has listed some of the must-have items you should have in your underwear drawer to help avoid a panic situation the next time you try on a new outfit for a special night out and realise your underwear doesn't work with it.Among her suggestions are: - make sure you have 3-4 standard bras that fit you properly. This is basic common sense, and every girl should have at least a few standard, comfy, smoothing bras in white, black and nude just to make sure you're covered for any colour or flimsy-material combination of outfit. - get a pair of seamless knickers. Another sensible point - there is nothing worse than a visible knicker line on a really expensive dress. - buy a proper, well-fitting strapless bra. This is a no-brainer. There's no point in buying an expensive off-the-shoulder Jane Norman number if your bra straps are showing. They're never the most comfortable of bras, but they'll make you look great in a boob tube. - get yourself some shapewear. I've recently tried the Elbrina Slimshape briefs, and they're pretty good. Personally, I prefer an all-in-one body when it comes to shapewear, as they tend to be more comfortable, but having some high-waist tummy-busters is a good idea if you want an hourglass figure in that little black dress you keep promising to wear. One bit of advice Samantha neglects is to always have something really, really nice in your underwear drawer (and I don't mean the flimsy contraption your partner ordered you from Anne Summers last Christmas that's lying at the bottom of your drawer). A nice corset, a cute babydoll or a decent-fitting basque should always be waiting in reserve for that special occasion... Labels: advice, basques, bras, corsets, lingerie, shape, strapless

Rigby & Peller - 70 years in the bra industryThe Guardian has profiled the world-famous lingerie makers, Rigby & Peller, who will celebrate their 70th anniversary in October this year.I've never had the privilege of owning a Rigby & Peller bra - or any other undergarments they make (hint-hint, if anyone fancies giving me some vouchers, I'll happily make the trip to London to splash out on a lavishly-expensive, but superbly-fitting bra). I'd be interested to find out if any of our readers own any Rigby & Peller bras, to see how they compare with high street bras (or even Brastop bras!). If you have any experience of the company that can proudly boast the Queen as their number one customer, add them in the comments below. Labels: big bras, bras, brastop, lingerie, rigby and peller 'Underneath It All' - a smart guide to loving your lingerie Have you ever wondered what the difference between a 'demi' and a 'tanga'?Have you never quire figured out the difference between a balcony bra and a push-up bra? Well, 'Underneath It All - A Girl's Guide to Buying, Wearing and Loving Lingerie' by Seattle authors Jennifer Manuel Carroll and Kathy Schultz may be the self-help book for you. Byt the sounds of things, it's the kind of book that this very blog is all about - funny, intresting anecdotes about lingerie (bras, in particular in my case), combined with some useful advice on what to wear, what not to wear, and how to go about it. I haven't had a chance to read it yet (it's not out yet), but you can pre-order it on Amazon.com ahead of it's release. I crtainly am!

It explores a number of themes such as boudoir to everyday glamour, ?Stars and their bras? From the risque to the radical, it's all there. The exhibition is open from Wednesday-Sunday, 11am-6pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Labels: bras, designers, exhibition, lingerie, models

Stink-free bras and briefs on the wayAs if the science of bras isn't complicated enough (at the last count, I think there was something like 50 individual parts in the average bra), the Japanese have started experimenting on stink-free underwear.Designed by Japan Women University, the technologically-advanced smalls will be tested by an astronaut of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, Koichi Wakata, on-board the International Space Station. The undergarment, called J-Ware, is being tested for seven days to establish the ability of the garments to absorb moisture, kill bacteria - their resistance to flame - anti-static properties, the ability to insulate and their quick-drying properties. The ultimate aim of the test is for consumers to be able to wear the lingerie for a week without having to worry about the smell. (Girls - if you're wearing a bra for seven days, you better be stranded on a desert island with Matthew Fox). Lingerie scientists take note: in the 1960s, Nasa spent millions of dollars developing a pen that could write in the zero-gravity environment of space; the Russians took a pencil. Say knickers to the recession![]() At least two stories hit the news headlines on Monday regarding lingerie bucking the downward trend in the economy. First, BBC News reported that luxury lingerie firm Agent Provocateur published sales figures for the year to mid-March up 8% at £22.4m. Then, NBC Los Angeles reported on the lingerie industry being "a lace-trimmed beacon of hope in this dingy economy" in tough times. Meanwhile, the Financial Times analyst Samantha Pearson says that while the lingerie market will decline by 0.8% in 2009, the drop is considerably lower than the 4% downward slide expected in the grocery industry (apparently, it's a good thing in the financial sector to decline less than in other areas of business). Garry Hogarth, chief executive of Agent Provocateur says the positive trend in the lingerie business is down to couples staying at home to save money, with more women investing in adventurous apparel to spice up their relationships. "It makes women feel good about themselves and we all need a bit of cheering up at the moment," says Mr Hogarth. How about you - are you saving your money for a nice bra set that you'll wear in on a Saturday night? |
