Postie swaps stamps for bras Who says a life in the lingerie business doesn't pay?The Craven Herald and Pioneer reports on John Tidwell, a sub-postmaster from West Marton who has stepped down from his duties dishing out stamps and weighing parcels to sell underwear. Just over two years ago, when his Post Office was threatened with closure, he started to sell lingerie and his business has become so successful that he is now training local woman Leah Booker to be the new sub-postmistress so he can concentrate on it full-time. Say knickers to the recession At least two stories hit the news headlines on Monday regarding lingerie bucking the downward trend in the economy. First, BBC News reported that luxury lingerie firm Agent Provocateur published sales figures for the year to mid-March up 8% at £22.4m. Then, NBC Los Angeles reported on the lingerie industry being "a lace-trimmed beacon of hope in this dingy economy" in tough times. Meanwhile, the Financial Times analyst Samantha Pearson says that while the lingerie market will decline by 0.8% in 2009, the drop is considerably lower than the 4% downward slide expected in the grocery industry (apparently, it's a good thing in the financial sector to decline less than in other areas of business). Garry Hogarth, chief executive of Agent Provocateur says the positive trend in the lingerie business is down to couples staying at home to save money, with more women investing in adventurous apparel to spice up their relationships. "It makes women feel good about themselves and we all need a bit of cheering up at the moment," says Mr Hogarth.
